Safety Measures for Rigging Equipment
Rigging is an
essential part of the entertainment industry. Whenever it is a matter of live
concerts, rigging becomes a crucial part without which the stage cannot be set.
Not only in the entertainment industry but studios and exhibitions also require
rigging. There are many pieces of equipment used in studio rigging. These tools are designed in a way to hold as well
as distribute heavy loads during the moving process. With the help of these
tools, the object is connected to the machines and gets moved in different
directions. Manufacturing, transportation and event staging industries
extensively use rigging equipment almost on a daily basis.
Safety Parameters for Rigging
Any rigging operation is prone to accidents; t herefore, it is of utmost importance to ensure maximum safety while using the tools. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, there are certain regulations that every rigging company must adhere to. The guidelines are designed to ensure the safety of both property and personnel. Before The Operation
* A thorough inspection of the equipment must be done. Style, size, diameter, thickness and length of the equipment have to be checked thoroughly.* All equipment must be in good condition and not outdated.
* The defective equipment must be removed from the premises immediately so that no one uses them by mistake and puts lives in danger.
* You must know about the
manufacturer’s specifications for exhibition
rigging that he has set for working loads and limits.
During The Operation
* Ensure that every operation is
within the specified load that the equipment is capable of handling.
* Take a look at the rigging
charts once in a while to ensure that you are maintaining the safety
regulations.
* There must be no personnel in
the lifting area. Keep them away to avoid any kind of accident.
* Do not hurry with the
hoisting. Lift the machine a few inches and check if everything is going
smoothly. Proceed only if you feel that the rigging is secure.
* The lift must be started and
stopped at a slow pace to avoid accidents.
* Do not leave a load suspension
on the rig. A sudden fall can lead to severe accidents.
* Ensure that a distance of at
least 10 feet is maintained from the power lines. An electrical disruption
during a live event will be totally uncalled for.
* Always remain on guard for
obstructions.
* When communicating with crane
operators, use proper hand signals and make sure that they understand you
clearly.
After The Operation
* When not in use, the studio rigging equipment must not lay
on the ground and be immediately moved to safe places.
* The rigging equipment is
advised to be stored in a safe space so that its shelf life is increased.
Exposure to moisture and air will lead to an accumulation of rust on the
rigging poles.
* Do not drop the equipment
heavily on the ground after the event. Harsh particles on the ground cause
corrosion and wear out the surface of the equipment faster.
* Avoid exposing the equipment
to UV rays over a long period of time. Harmful rays dull and fade the surface
polish over time.
Rigging is an innate part of many live concerts,
events and exhibitions. There must be sufficient safety protocols in place to
take good care of the equipment and avoid unfortunate accidents. Exhibition rigging accidents are fatal
and might damage property and also kill many people. If heavy objects fall from
a great height, there are more than one ways for danger to pave its way. Thus,
it is crucial for rigging companies to abide by the rules and regulations while
handling the equipment.
